COLUMBUS, Ohio- Fourteen students from the Riverside Business Professionals of America (BPA) chapter competed at the Ohio BPA Leadership Conference last week in Columbus.
Jadzia Cafe’ placed third in Fundamental Desktop Publishing, advancing to the National BPA Leadership Conference in Boston, Massachusetts in May.
Several individuals and teams from the Riverside BPA chapter placed in the top ten including:
- Riverside’s Economic Research Team consisting of Conor Osborn, Lane Willoby, Kyle Knight and Alonzo Stotler
- Samantha Neeley competed in Economic Research
- Trevor Hillard competed in Extemporaneous Speech
- Tylor Eaton scored above an 85 percent in the open contest of Financial Math & Analysis
Also during the conference, 19 students received Statesman Torch Awards- the most Torch awards received by a school at the awards ceremony. The BPA Torch Awards Program encourages students to complete activities and earn points in seven categories: leadership, service, cooperation, knowledge, friendship, hope/faith, and patriotism. A Statesman Torch Award requires 50 points in each Torch category. A Statesman is defined as “one who is a leader in the promotion of the public good and in national affairs.”
The Riverside BPA chapter is part of Ohio Hi-Point Career Center’s Media Arts and Business satellite programs at the high school. The instructors are Michelle Weadock and Lindsay Wyan.

On Wednesday, September 23, the Riverside FFA Officer Team attended the 4th annual Ohio FFA Legislative Leadership Conference (OLLC) held at the Ohio State House in Columbus.
The conference began with a presentation by a spokesman for the Ohio Farm Bureau about how FFA members can influence their elected officials on agricultural issues. Riverside officers learned about lobbyist, politics and how decisions are done at the state house. Officers found it interesting thing to go to because they learned how the legislative branch works.
FFA members simulated working through legislative bills with constituents and members from both house and senate.
The National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) recognized the Riverside Local Schools FFA program in DeGraff for successfully creating an official Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site.
